‘In the event of winning’ is an ongoing propositional artwork made specifically for the context of a merit-based art prize. First made in 2016 for the John Fries Award, it takes the form of a letter to the judges outlining the conditions set by the artist, and imploring them to make their decision without knowing the contents of the artwork. In previous iterations the proposed outcome has been an acceptance speech that is only delivered in the event that it is announced as the winning artwork. For the Darebin Art Prize, which is acquisitive, the work takes a physical form, and is contained within a security wrapped carry case. On the night of the opening, in the event that it is announced as the winning artwork, the judges (or a gallery/council representative) may ceremoniously cut the plastic security wrap and reveal the contents of the case.
Exhibited at the Bundoora Homestead Art Centre in the event of being a finalist in the 2017 Darebin Art Prize. Previously versions exhibited in the Keith & Elisabeth Murdoch Travelling Fellowship (2017), Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize (2017), and the John Fries Award (2016)
